Albasini macadamia cultivars

Beaumont (695)

This is the type we have planted mostly throughout our farm and through the whole of South Africa seems to be the most dominant cultivar. They produce high yield, if managed well and irrigated properly, even in times when there is little rain.A great advantage of this high producing tree that starts bearing at an early age. Because it only drops it’s nuts when sprayed with Ethapon (registered for use on Beaumont), it’s harvest is easy and efficient to manage. Generally it is said that Beaumonts produce relatively smaller nuts than other cultivars, but WelMac has achieved results in recent years producing a majority of its harvest from Beaumonts bigger than 22mm.

Albasini macadamia cultivars

A4/A16

Two very successful and commonly used cultivars, both bearing at a younger age, although not as early as the Beaumont. With high yields and big nuts, combined with relatively thin shells as specific properties it explains why these cultivars are so popular. Although they come with certain challenges in terms of thrips and ‘sticky’ shells, we surely recommend having these types represented in your orchard.

Albasini macadamia cultivars

842/849

As we are achieving good results with these two cultivars, we can recommend them as a good alternative to the Beaumont, as we wouldn’t recommend planting only one variety throughout your whole farm. They generally both start bearing early, generally at year 4, a year later then the Beaumonts but still relatively early compared to other cultivars. With high SKR even in years where temperatures reach into the 40’s, this cultivar generally does well in the Limpopo area.

Albasini macadamia cultivars

814

As we are located on a slightly higher altitude, the 814 is a recommended choice as it performs well higher above sea-level. Although it produces relatively small kernels, it is considered a high yielding tree.

Albasini Macadamia Cultivars

As our farm is located in Limpopo, with its specific weather conditions and relatively low rainfall and high temperatures, our main production of cultivars are ones that perform well in this specific area under these conditions.

If your farm is located in a different area with significantly different climate and there is already producing macadamia trees in your area, our team can come and collect graft material from your own orchard or region, ensuring the cultivars we produce specifically for you, are adapted to your local weather conditions.

In our orchard our best production comes from the Beaumonts, 849, 842, 814, A4 and A16 which are the varieties we mainly produce in our nursery. We use material from these trees, that we know produce exceptional high yields every year, as opposed to 'mother blocks' that exist only for reproduction. This way we can ensure that - with proper management - you can achieve similar results in terms of quantity as well as quality. All trees are grafted on Beaumont rootstock, as this has proven to provide the strongest roots.
